Emergency Maintenance Notification – June 4, 2012

Last night, Microsoft released security advisory 2718704 detailing a critical implementation vulnerability in the Microsoft Public Key Infrastructure that permits a malicious user to sign any code as originating from Microsoft. Because all major operating systems and web browsers automatically trust the Microsoft Root Certification Authority, its subordinate certificates and any code signed using one of these certificates, this vulnerability should be treated as very critical.

Donet Systems Administrators have completed installation of this critical security update across all Donet infrastructure and managed customer environments with the exception of systems running legacy Windows versions (e.g. Windows Server 2003 R2 and below) due to restart requirements.

Donet Systems Administrators will be installing this critical security update on all remaining shared infrastructure and managed customer environments beginning at 11:00 PM EDT this evening (06/04/2012) with an anticipated completion time of 12:00 AM EDT on Tuesday (06/05/2012).

The installation process takes approximately 2-3 minutes to complete and requires a restart when installed on servers running Windows Server 2003 R2 and below. Service interruptions are expected to be brief and will likely go unnoticed, however minor service interruptions may occur.

All unmanaged customers running Windows are highly encouraged to install this security update at their earliest convenience. The update can be obtained through Windows Update or directly from Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2718704.
